WONDERFUL TOWN ist inspiriert von Takua Pa, einer Stadt im Süden
Thailands, in der 2004 achttausend Menschen im Tsunami umkamen.
Als ich zwei Jahre nach der Katastrophe dort hinkam, hatte ich einen
seltsamen Eindruck von der Stadt: Sie war sehr friedlich und schön.
Alle Erinnerungen an den Tsunami waren verschwunden, als hätten die
Einwohner sie loswerden wollen. Die Straßen waren in Stand gesetzt,
die Häuser neu aufgebaut, die Kokosnussbäume wiegten sich im Wind
wie immer. Aber so unversehrt die Stadt selbst auch wirkte – die
Menschen waren es nicht. Ich hatte den Eindruck, als wären sie noch
immer wie betäubt, als wären sie gerade aufgewacht und könnten sich
nicht an den Heimweg erinnern. Die Wirtschaft der Stadt befand sich
noch immer auf einem Tiefpunkt, da die Touristen noch nicht an die
Strände zurückgekehrt waren. Eine seltsame Traurigkeit war spürbar;
es war für mich eine Stadt der Traurigkeit. Diese Atmosphäre wollte
ich mit meinem Film vermitteln.
