Japan im Jahr 1684. Um in der Situation seines Meisters aus einer finanziellen Zwangslage zu helfen, fälscht ein junger Gehilfe Urkunden. Als der Betrug entdeckt wird, flieht er. Auch die Frau des Meisters setzt sich ab und wird mit ihm gefangen. Sie sucht mit dem Geliebten den Tod. Fesselnde Verfilmung, basierend auf dem Theaterstück „Daikyoji mukashi-goyomi“ von Monzaemon Chikamatsu.
