A poetical and musical evocation

Western Thebes spreads out on the left bank of the Nile, in Louxor, Upper Egypt. It is there where ancient Thebes along with its traditional life collides with the modern world: They cross and overlap. In the shadow of the pharaonic tombs, next to the famous "Valley of Kings" and the big grave temples swings the daily life of the villages in the mysterious rhythm of their beauty. The essential remains secret towards the many tourists that come from all over the world to see this place. However the bulldozers destroy the villages that were built above the ancient graves: there is a huge archaeologic and touristic projekt in process.

The poetical and musical evocation has nearly become silent: there are no more words, the language lies now in the music and in the pictures. We are invited to take us some time, to listen and to watch, in order to hear thousands of surprising stories: mysterious, funny and gorgeous stories, as well as tragical ones, that involve us in the apparent chaos of life and death. The superb pictures of Pio Corradi are to be discovered without comments, naked in their power and sensibility. And the music of the trio "Afrogarage" represents the voice of the poet, the lyrical resonating between singing and braying.

Der Filmemacher und Musiker Jacques Siron möchte uns mit seinem «anderen» Dokumentarfilm, der aus betörenden Bildern von Kameramann Pio Corradi und einem Geräusche-Sound-Teppich des Trios Afrogarage besteht, auf eine Reise des reinen Schauens mitnehmen: In ruhigen Bildern und repetitiven Tönen werden wir in die Alltagsrituale des kleinen Dorfs eingeführt.

Regisseur Jacques Siron, der als Bassist von Afrogarage eine Doppelfunktion wahrnimmt, ist eine musikalische Bilderreise geglückt, die an die besten Traditionen des essayistischen Musikfilms anknüpft... Es beginnt etwas Magisches: Musik und Bilder fangen an immer mehr zu verschmelzen, die Schnitte werden schneller, manches wird nur noch kurz angetippt, das Piano setzt prägnante rhythmische Akzente, das Geschehen wird komplexer, aber Strukturen treten nun immer klarer hervor, bisweilen wird einem schwindlig in dieser Symphonie aus Bildern, Rhythmen und Klängen.

Siron verzichtet auf einen Kommentar. Er konstruiert sein Porträt von Theben aus dem Zusammenspiel von ausdrucksstarken Bildern (Kamera: Pio Corradi) und den meditativ-jazzigen Klängen und Stimmexperimenten des Trios Afrogarage, bei dem Siron selber Bass spielt und singt.
