Soul Power

Durant l’automne 1974, en prélude au choc opposant Mohamed Ali à George Foreman, les plus grands noms de la soul et du r&b américain se sont retrouvés aux côtés des stars de la musique africaine sur une scène gigantesque montée à Kinshasa, au Zaïre, pour trois soirs de concerts enflammés. Ce festival musical fut conçu et organisé par Hugh Masekela, fameux musicien sud-africain, et par le producteur Stewart Levine, et se concrétisa lorsque le promoteur de boxe Don King eut l’idée de combiner l’événement live avec le match qu’il comptait organiser entre Mohamed Ali et George Foreman, une baston épique connue sous le nom de «Rumble In The Jungle». Ce combat de titans a été montré dans le documentaire réalisé en 1996 par Leon Gast, "When We Were Kings", qui gagna un Oscar.

Rarement poignées de secondes auront été aussi cruciales dans l’histoire de notre société faite d’images symboles que celles qui virent Mohamed Ali mettre au tapis George Foreman une nuit d’octobre 1974 dans l’ex-Congo belge devenu Zaïre sous la pression du colonel Joseph Mobutu. Cet instant hors du temps qui mène à la chute de Foreman, ce n’est pas un coup de poing balancé par un boxeur qui sait danser, c’est le triomphe d’une utopie panafricaine, le début et la fin d’un rêve confus de retour à la terre mère, d’une fierté retrouvée. "Soul Power" est une aventure hors du commun racontée par Jeffrey Levy-Hinte avec des images inédites d’une foudroyante beauté.
